How to Write Etsy Product Descriptions That Sell

How to Write Etsy Product Descriptions That Sell

August 03, 20225 min read

You’ve made a fantastic digital product. Now all that’s left is listing it, right?

You mustn’t rush the listing process because a great Etsy product description can significantly affect how well your product sells. A good product description increases your sales, helps your product get noticed, and answers common questions about your product.

If you’re unsure how to write a fantastic Etsy product description, this is the guide you need!

  1. Start with a Winning First Line & Address Pain Points

What problem is your product solving for the customer? Is it helping busy parents track their family’s prescriptions or plan meals? Is it helping people pay down their debt or save for a special family vacation?

What pain points does your product solve? Consider this and then write it into a gripping first line that immediately tells the customer what benefits your product will provide them.

Remember, benefits, not features, are a stronger selling point. When we shop, we are trying to solve a problem or need and are in an emotional state. While certain features are important to the customer, your product's benefits are even more emotionally compelling, making them more critical for driving sales.

  1. Create a Strong Title

You should write your Etsy title as you would search for the product on Etsy or Google. Avoid overly artsy, creative, or fun titles as people are searching using simple language.

For example, if you search ‘book’ on Etsy, the search bar generates simple search results like ‘bookmark,’ book stamp,’ or ‘book lover gift.’ All of these are short and to the point.

Writing a flowy title like ‘Eclectic, Whimsical, Floral, Flowy Book Stamp’ is far more confusing for the customer and Etsy search engine than ‘Teacher Library Stamp, Personalized Teacher Stamp’

Both titles tell the search engine and customer that you are listing a book stamp. However, the second title tells you that this is specifically a library book stamp that is ideal for teachers, so the customer immediately knows what the product is for.

Use a keyword tool to find the best keywords to include in your title to help it pop up more frequently in search results. Erank is one of my favorite tools for finding keywords with a high search volume, high click-through rate, and low competition!

  1. High-Quality Photos Are Everything

A picture is worth a thousand words, and for digital listings, it’s worth even more!

I cannot stress the importance of having beautiful, high-quality images in your listings. Start by creating images in the recommended aspect ratio and image size for Etsy listings, which is a 4:3 ratio and at least 2700 px wide and 2025 px height. Etsy also recommends a minimum of 2000px for images so that the picture isn’t blurry when someone zooms in. If you need to resize your photos, I recommend using Canva

Next, consider the setting for your photo. Lifestyle settings where the product is in use are a great option. For example, if you sell prints, show your print hanging in a beautiful frame on the wall, or your printable planner in a nice binder or journal filled out to show customers how they could use it.

Canva can save you a lot of time by creating beautiful product mockups using their templates. This tip is especially helpful for digital products, which may look more beautiful displayed on a phone, tablet, or computer in a mockup than if you try to capture them with a camera yourself.

  1. Include Thorough Details in Your Listing Description

As a seller, you must be able to anticipate customer needs and questions. Look at your product and consider every question you would have about it if you could not touch or try it yourself.

List details like:

  • The size and weight of your product or its format

  • What software your template or digital product is compatible with

  • Everything included in the product - the number of pages in the how-to guide, the item’s material, personalization options, etc.

  • Recommendations for using the product

  • Who the product is intended for

  • If it’s available for commercial use

Take your product features list to the next level by tying in a tangible benefit to each feature. For example, instead of “10 page how to guide’ say “10 page how to guide - an easy afternoon read so you can start decluttering right away.”

  1. Keep It Simple

Customers are busy looking for the perfect product and won’t stick around to read paragraphs of dense text.

Use a conversational, engaging tone, and keep your sentences short and to the point. Use bullet point formatting and spacing to break up long text and highlight key features and benefits.

Lastly, always proofread your listing before posting it. You want your customers to view you as a professional, so run your listing through a spellchecker and proofread it for punctuation, awkward sentences, and poor grammar. If grammar and spelling aren’t your strengths, ask a friend or family member to proofread your listing. You don’t want to discourage sales because of misspelled words or overly complicated paragraphs.
